The Nasher Sculpture Center is a museum and sculpture garden. Located in the Arts District of downtown Dallas, Texas, USA, it houses one of the premier collections of modern and contemporary sculpture. The 66,000-square-foot building was designed by architect Renzo Piano in collaboration with landscape architect Peter Walker. The center's collection was founded by real estate developer Raymond Nasher who began collecting sculpture in the 1950s. In 1997 he donated his 1000 piece collection to the center which opened in 2003. The collection includes works by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Joan Miró, Alberto Giacometti, Henry Moore and Roy Lichtenstein among others as well as 20th century works by many sculptors including Richard Serra and Ellsworth Kelly.
The Nasher is located in the Dallas Arts District, with its neighbors being the Dallas Museum of Art and the Crow Museum of Asian Art across Flora Street. The building itself is composed almost entirely of glass, concrete, and metal and has a silver roof that reflects heat from sunlight. It is located near to other cultural landmarks such as Klyde Warren Park, Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center, Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, Belo Mansion, The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza, Dallas Holocaust Museum / Center for Education & Tolerance, Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre and Winspear Opera House. You may consider yourself to be a romantic at heart, but even if you aren't that's easy to do when you're strolling through the Nasher Sculpture Center. In fact, this is one of the best spots for a date in all of Dallas—with lots of interesting art pieces to admire together and plenty of lovely spots to sit and chat. This place was founded by Raymond and Patsy Nasher, who were not only philanthropists but also avid art collectors. They wanted to build a sculpture garden where visitors could touch the art and enjoy it on a daily basis instead of just in an indoor museum setting on special occasions. The result is a beautiful oasis right in downtown Dallas with more than 300 sculptures spread out over an entire acre. It's worth noting that this isn't just any old sculpture garden—it has been called one of the best outdoor sculpture spaces in the world! This is due largely to its proximity to highly-praised museums like the Dallas Museum of Art and the Crow Collection of Asian Art, as well as its impressive architecture (the building itself was designed by Renzo Piano) along with its stunning landscaping (designed by Peter Walker). “I wanted to create a sculpture garden that people could visit, touch, and enjoy all kinds of art on a daily basis.” Raymond wanted the sculpture garden to be open to the public and be open year round. He also wanted it to be in Dallas Texas. Raymond said he was inspired by the way people would visit Central Park everyday to look at and touch the sculptures.
The Nasher Sculpture Center opened in 2003 and is located in downtown Dallas. It was designed by Renzo Piano, a Pritzker Prize-winning Italian architect who designed the New York Times Building and the California Academy of Sciences. The center houses more than 300 sculptures and paintings by artists such as Auguste Rodin, Henri Matisse, Alexander Calder, Pablo Picasso, Alberto Giacometti, Joan Miro and many others. Not only does it have permanent collections but also temporary exhibitions that are displayed throughout the year. If you are planning a trip to the Dallas area, with a large group of passengers you can count on a Dallas bus rental to transport your group to your desired locations. Enjoy stress free group transportation with a coach bus rental perfect for 45-60 passengers.
In addition to the works of Rodin, you can see pieces by more contemporary artists. Among these are Richard Serra's “11-Foot-Wide Torqued Ellipse” and Bruce Nauman's “Raw War”, which features a giant neon sign that reads, “RAW WAR.” Ellsworth Kelly is also represented, with two works in the garden: “Curve XXVII” and “Curve with Six Branches.” Another notable piece is Martin Puryear's “Large Spindle.”
Nasher Sculpture Center is open to visitors all year round, Tuesday through Sunday from 11am to 5pm. The park is closed on Mondays and major holidays. Admission to the museum is free for all visitors, and parking is available for free at the Nasher Sculpture Center garage.
